This site came into being in January 2008 as a course resource for St. Lawrence College's Internet Marketing MCOM-30 course. The course is part of the College's Advertising — Integrated Marketing program.
About Me
I'm David Colburn and I've been immersed in online digital culture since my first computer, an Apple IIe, sometime back in the early 80s. I remember thinking that a 4800 baud modem was the cat's whiskers.
I've been a part of the publishing and communications community in Canada since I put out my first high school literary magazine using a Gestner copier sometime around 1968. Fortunately, no copies still exist. More recently, I've taught courses in the Web Developer program at St Lawrence—from HTML and CSS to Internet Marketing.
Prior to moving to the Kingston area in 2001 I worked in a variety of positions in the design and communications industries in Toronto including stints as production manager for a leading Canadian corporate design firm, production manager for The Financial Post, then as a product manager at The Financial Post. My last years in Toronto were spent with Canada NewsWire where I managed their Content redistribution and Internet businesses. In the last role I played a leading part in the introduction of webcasting to Canada and the development of CNW's market leading offering in that arena.
Since moving to Kingston I've been the principal of an Internet consultancy, Island Design Works, specializing in developing Web standards-based solutions for clients' communications needs.
